Naturally Fed Up
In the Food Ethics Project, we studied the ethics of food that we followed, we learned about the commercial food market and the industrial food systems. We also followed the opposite by learning about local food systems, sustainable farming, and local sourcing. During this project, we traveled to places like James Ranch where we got to see first hand the sustainable farming in our own community. Towards the end of our semester we were tasked with creating a dinner using a overall theme, before we were exempt from the project, my group decided to make a vegan vs non-vegan dinner with a similar culture background.
For me I found myself struggling at times due to the interdisciplinary theme of this project. I think it is because I had so much on my plate at one time, that the idea of having so much time and freedom due to LINK created a mental block that made it hard for me to focus on both my chemistry and humanities food projects. I think that being able to study food in both Chemistry and Humanities made it is that I could more easily grasp the concept of my food project(s) and my food ethics. I learned what I felt about the way we eat as a society and what roles chemistry has in the food I eat every day. I think that having the ability to study the same topic in two classes also made it harder for me to focus on which class was which, and what the different requirements were after three weeks away from school.
I think studying food academically made me think about how others can handle eating such unethically friendly food with or without knowledge. I also think that learning about the food systems countries all over the world use makes me think more about what I eat and where it comes from and how it affects our local and non local ecosystems.
